Government should assess economic benefit of future Tiger visit, not his personal life
Worldwide Import-Export News Add commentsFrom a $3 million investment, Victoria gained an economic advantage of $34 million from Tiger Woods’ visit to the State last year, and would be worth the investment again, says VEIC.
“Tiger Woods’ personal behaviour may be of interest to gossip magazines, but should not be an influence on Government policy on major events,” says VEIC Chairman, Mr Peter Jones.
“Tiger Woods remains the number one golfer in the world and a massive drawcard to golf fans.
“As long as that public interest remains in watching Tiger play, there is a strong economic argument to be made to ensure his presence at future golfing championships.
“People may form their own opinions of Tiger’s personal life, but the job of the Victorian State Government is to secure large-scale events for our State that bring in tourists and assist the economy.
“The last time Tiger visited, the State enjoyed a $34 million injection into our economy, largely due to the large numbers of people who attended the golf from interstate and overseas.
“This is a high price to pay for moral grandstanding.
“We pay for State visits by Heads of State with more serious flaws, for example, a dubious human rights record.
“VEIC anticipates that any future Tiger Woods benefit would generate significant economic benefit in the shape of ticket sales, accommodation bookings, meals, transport and sales of golfing gear,” says Mr Jones.
