Mr Venu Srinivasan, chairman of TVS Motors and managing director of Sundaram Clayton, is the new chairman. He was earlier president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and is also a recipient of Padma Shri Award.

Other members include members of parliament N.K. Singh, Deepa Das Munsi, Kumari Saroj Pandey, NIFT’s director general, financial adviser at the ministry of textiles, joint secretary at the ministry of textiles, joint secretary at the ministry of human resource development, Mr Sanjay Jayavardhanevelu of Lakshmi Machine Works in Coimbatore, Mr Prashant Agarwal, managing director of Bombay Rayon Fashions in Mumbai, Mr M. Ramaswamy of Warsaw International in Tirupur, Ms Rajshree Pathy, director of Rajshree Spinning Mills in Coimbatore and Mr Dilip B. Jiwrajka, managing director of Alok Industries in Mumbai.

The names approved by Mr Maran has been approved by president Pratibha Patil. The NIFT has centres at New Delhi, Kangra, Rai Barelly, Gandhinagar, Bhopal, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kannur, Patna and Shillong.

The new centres are coming up at Coimbatore, Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar and Srinagar. The institute has 8,400 students.

It represents a 30% increase in size compared to the show in August 2009. The sourcing show starts on August 16, one day before the Magic Marketplace, and will this year celebrate India as the focus country with over 75 exhibitors.

Textile minister Dayanidhi Maran will be in attendance on August 16 for the official ribbon-cutting and inauguration ceremony at the India Pavillion. Other countries significantly expanding their presence at the August show are Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Mexico with more than 60 new exhibitors from these regions. Premier China is another new area with 30 large vertically integrated manufacturers from China.

“As the wealth of resources on the Magic show floor continues to grow, we are seeing equally exciting developments in sourcing,” said Mr Chris DeMoulin, Magic International president. “The Magic Marketplace is definitively the most efficient one-stop shopping resource in the world for the entire fashion industry.”

Fabric mills, trim and component suppliers, print design studios and fashion supply chain providers from over 40 countries will be at next month’s event at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Liz Claiborne’s CEO William McComb said the current fleet of company stores was originally designed and leased to handle clearance for many brands in its portfolio which is now “an outdated consumer proposition and one that no longer makes economic sense.”

The company has made vast changes to its portfolio and business strategy over the past three years. Mr McComb said: “With the launches of the Liz Claiborne brand at JCPenney and Liz Claiborne New York at QVC — both next month — we’re announcing that we will be exiting our 87 Liz Claiborne branded outlet stores in the United States and Puerto Rico, the majority of which will be exited in the coming months.”

In connection with the action, Liz Claiborne estimates non-cash impairment charges of about seven million dollars in the second quarter of 2010. The company said it expects the related operating losses from the Liz Claiborne outlet stores to be eliminated in early 2011.

Dr. Abdul Aziz, Secretary General, IRRDB will preside over the inaugural function. After the inaugural session Prof. J. Sreenivasan (Indian Institute of Science, Banagalore) will deliver the keynote address on the subject Why should we worry about climate change. Following this Dr. Stephen V. Evans, Secretary General, International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) will deliver a special talk on Demand and Supply Relations in a Changing Climate. Dr. James Jacob, Director, RRII and Vice Chairman of the IRRDB will welcome the gathering and Dr. R. Krishna Kumar, Joint Director, RRII and IRRDB Liaison Officer for physiology group will propose vote of thanks.

The workshop is being conceived with the objectives to review how far climate has changed in the major natural rubber producing countries of the world, to examine how far climate change impacted growth and productivity of rubber, to assess future climate scenarios in natural rubber growing countries, to evolve research strategies for rubber cultivation in stressful environments, to evaluate the carbon dioxide sequestration potential of natural rubber holdings in different countries and to evaluate innovations in rubber processing and manufacturing industries for energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emission to mitigate climate changes.

Thirty one scientific papers will be presented in the workshop by the experts from the areas of physiology, agronomy, molecular biology, biotechnology, breeding, pathology, climatology, extension and planning. Dr. Abdul Aziz (Secretary General, IRRDB), Dr. Stephen V. Evans (Secretary General, IRSG), Dr. M. R. Sethuraj (Former Director, RRII),Dr. N. M. Mathew (Former Director, RRII) and Dr. K. Jayarathnam (Former Project Director) will moderate the discussions.

Dr. Nataraja Karaba (University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore), Dr. M. Gopalakrishnan, (Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage, Thiruvananthapuram), Dr. P. Jambulingam (Vector Control Research Centre, Pondicherry), Dr. Suseelendra Desai (Central Research Institute for Dryland Agruiculture, Hyderabad) and Dr. Arup K. Chandra (Appolo Tyres, Baroda) will give special talks on climate change and its impact on the agricultural sector.

Representatives from Malaysia, Indonesia Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China, Cambodia and India will participate in the workshop.

Designed to engage and hear the views of the local cotton community and help generate a greater understanding of the principles of contract sanctity, ICA Rules and arbitration procedures, the event was open to both ICA members and non-members and it was free to attend.

At the summit, Ertugrul Tanriverdi, ICA Director and Vice President of Ensar Tekstil – a spinning company based in Turkey – welcomed the delegation. During his address, Ertugrul highlighted the fact that cotton production in Turkey does not meet consumption: “Last year, our production was 1,800,000 bales and consumption was 5,600,000,” he explained. “If we calculate the difference in volume, it is about $1.5 billion dollars shortfall. We currently have just four Turkish firms who are members of the ICA. I believe we should definitely increase participation – if we do not participate on the ruling platform, we will not be a voice in the solution.”

Abdulkadir Kurtul, president of KASIAD, echoed Ertugrul’s message. He stated that Turkey and Kahramanmaras are in strong position in cotton and reminded delegates that, in the past, Turkey had a very important position in cotton production. “We really do not have any problem with consumption,” he said. “This shows our leadership in the textile business. But our country should be at a balance between production and consumption. The cotton is a strategic product to Turkey, therefore production problems must be solved if the voice of Turkish cotton producers is to be heard.”

ICA President, Cliff White and ICA Managing Director, Kai Hughes went on to deliver presentations that focused on the trading rules, contract agreements, arbitration and dispute resolution. During the open forum session, they took questions from the floor and reinforced the message that ICA Rules are not designed to limit trade – they serve as a guideline for the trade and are the basis of contract agreements.

Speaking after the summit Cliff White said: “We want to pass on our sincere thanks to everybody at KASIAD and to Ertugrul Tanriverdi for organising the event. We are very pleased with the number of delegates that attended and sincerely hope that, after today, they decide to join us. The overriding objective of the ICA is to promote contract sanctity through good trading practices. We can only truly achieve this through communication, education and engagement with participants across the industry spectrum and that is what this summit has been all about.”

Ruyi Group will invest JPY4 billion in the new JV and owns a 40% stake in the company; while over 50% will be invested by Renown. The new JV will reportedly sell Renown’s apparel products under four brands in China and it plans to expand into other Asian markets outside China.

The new company, which is expected to be set up before March 2011, plans to open over 2,000 stores in ten years, with annual sales of over JPY100 billion.

Sales for FY2010 were $121.0 million, an increase of 11.9 per cent and a record for the company (FY2009: $108.1 million). While the board will not declare a final dividend for FY2010 until the audited results are complete, it has already determined that this will be not less than one cent per share. During the year, Shenhua’s international (ex-China) sales grew, with export revenue rising 4.4 per cent to $84.7 million (FY2009: $81.1 million). The company’s penetration of the China market continued its momentum, and sales were $36.3 million in FY2010 (FY2009: $27.0 million).

The proportion of sales to China as a percentage of total sales increased five per cent to 30 per cent (FY2009: 25 per cent). The company continues to focus on increasing its sales of finished goods such as curtains, pillows and quilts, and the proportion of finished product sales grew significantly from five per cent of total sales in FY2009 to 12 per cent in FY2010. Shenhua receives a higher gross profit for its finished goods than for its fabrics alone, and has increased its investment in research and development to expand its range and business. New fabrics being developed include water resistant earthwork cloth and upholstery for aeroplanes and buses. Philip Widjaya, managing director of Shenhua said, We are pleased to report a record profit in our first year as a listed company on the Australian Securities Exchange.

This reflects the success of our strategy to expand market share in China, and the company was able to increase its international sales despite difficult markets in developed countries. Increasing urbanization and consumer affluence are driving our sales in China, and we plan to take advantage of the growing economy through the gradual establishment of direct sales centers and expansion of our sales channel. Internationally, while sales to developed markets remain flat with constrained discretionary spending, we are increasing our sales focus on the fast-growing emerging markets of Africa and South America.

Century Textiles’ first quarter results turned out to be discouraging as the net profits for the period fell by 29.08% to Rs.100.43 crore, while net sales too fell by 0.56% at Rs.1115.42 crore for the quarter ending June 2010.

The company stocks declined after the results announcement by the company. The stocks traded at Rs.453.10 down by 1.6% from its last week’s closing on the BSE.
