Ruth Ingman, President of the Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, accompanied by Hon. Deputy President, John Townsend, had the opportunity of meeting the H.E. Steve Williams, the UK Ambassador to Bulgaria in a recent visit to Sofia, the capital.
The visit was in conjunction with the UKTI “Design Leicestershire” Mission to Sofia, which took a party of architects, landscape designers, interior designers and product designers to investigate the Bulgarian market. Although the Bulgarian market is very depressed at present, there are excellent opportunities for building partnerships and joint ventures for the future, when things improve.
This UKTI Mission was specially timed to coincide with the celebrations in Haskovo – Leicester’s twin city in Bulgaria – and the Haskovo Chamber of Commerce’s International Conference, when Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Mr Svetan Svetanov, met local civic and business leaders to review the government’s strategy for helping SMEs to engage in international trade. The meeting was also attended by several local MPs and by Ambassadors from South Africa, Ireland, the Netherlands and Poland.
Leicester is still the only UK city to have a formal twinning agreement with Bulgaria – this twinning agreement includes a ten-year programme of cooperation covering civic administration, social housing, school teacher exchanges, policing and fire & rescue services.
