India: The textile ministry has reconstituted the National Institute of Fashion Technology’s board of governors as the tenure of previous board expired on March 31. Textile minister Dayanidhi Maran has included prominent textile industrialists and professionals including AEPC chairman Premal Udani and president of the Tirupur Exporters Association A. Sakthivel in the newly-constituted board.
Mr Venu Srinivasan, chairman of TVS Motors and managing director of Sundaram Clayton, is the new chairman. He was earlier president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and is also a recipient of Padma Shri Award.
Other members include members of parliament N.K. Singh, Deepa Das Munsi, Kumari Saroj Pandey, NIFT’s director general, financial adviser at the ministry of textiles, joint secretary at the ministry of textiles, joint secretary at the ministry of human resource development, Mr Sanjay Jayavardhanevelu of Lakshmi Machine Works in Coimbatore, Mr Prashant Agarwal, managing director of Bombay Rayon Fashions in Mumbai, Mr M. Ramaswamy of Warsaw International in Tirupur, Ms Rajshree Pathy, director of Rajshree Spinning Mills in Coimbatore and Mr Dilip B. Jiwrajka, managing director of Alok Industries in Mumbai.
The names approved by Mr Maran has been approved by president Pratibha Patil. The NIFT has centres at New Delhi, Kangra, Rai Barelly, Gandhinagar, Bhopal, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kannur, Patna and Shillong.
The new centres are coming up at Coimbatore, Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar and Srinagar. The institute has 8,400 students.
